Martín Sarmiento Mencía 2011
Tasting: Mencía, is a grape variety indigenous to the northwest of Spain that makes light bodied wines. Mencía in Bierzo, although still light in body, tends to display a little more richness and ripeness texture wise due to the specific microclimate found in Bierzo. Martín Sarmiento is the premium expression of Galician producer Bodegas Martín Códax’s Bierzo project, from the very best fruit of a single vineyard in Bierzo Alto. A nose of intense black fruit, spice and incense supports an incredible palate of blackberry compote, liquorice, green peppercorns and black quartz slate. The texture is velvety and tannins practically caress the palate. Sublime!
