Bodegas Protos
Marilena Bonilla
Founded in 1927 by 11 co-operative growers, it was originally named ‘Bodega Ribera del Duero’ and is considered the first fully established winery in the region. Later their name was changed to Protos, and they allowed their now brand name ‘Ribera Duero’ to be used for the formation of the appellation in 1982. Bodegas Protos are one of the oldest, most respected producers in the appellation of Ribera del Duero, their newly appointed architecturally acclaimed winery was built in 2008 and is linked to their old winery built into the hillside below the castle of Peñafiel by 2kms of underground tunnels. Protos are traditional producers of oak aged Tinto Fino (Tempranillo), producing the very essence of Ribera del Duero’s history whilst acknowledging and shaping its future. They also have extensive holdings plus another winery in the heartland of Verdejo production, Rueda
